A Reading Habit among Grade Four Pupils of Alfonso Central School and How it affects their Level of Reading Comprehension

INTRODUCTION
The primary purpose of this research was to assess the pupils' reading habit and its correlation to their reading comprehension.
METHODS
The respondents of the study were the 40 Grade Four Sampaguita pupils of Alfonso Central School for the SY 2017-2018. In this study, the researchers made use of the descriptive-normative survey and the correlational design with the aid of pupil as informants. Relationship between the variables reading habit and reading comprehension was also established.
RESULTS
Books that have mystery or problem to solve were liked by grade four pupils the most with 50%, ranked 1; followed by books that made up story with 30%, in second-ranked;. Third in ranked are books that made you laugh gathered 23%. Lastly, with 20% are books that tell true story and books that have characters you could be like and books that let you use your imagination. Data showed an increase in the percentage of pupils who are under instructional level in reading comprehension from 48% as of July to 23% in November. This result showed that 25% decreased from the start of the study up tothe end of November revealed that the reading habit affects the reading comprehension of the grade four pupils positively. This also showed that there was a decrease in the frustration level and level up to an instructional level, which is all due to the developing of reading habit among the respondents who are grade four pupils.
DISCUSSIONS
It was concluded that based on the different findings Based on the results of the study, the following conclusions were drawn, (1). That the 72% of the grade four pupils were in independent level and 45% like reading and it can be done anytime which lead them to form a reading habit and at the same time a higher level of comprehension. (2). That the reason why they read is to grow in understanding of the problem, to grow intellectually and at the same time like to read books that have mystery or problem to solve. This also concludes that pupils who like to grow intellectually and who would like to grow in understanding are of the high level of comprehension. (3). That reading comprehension is affected by reading habit. Reading habit affects reading comprehension positively and is relevant and at the same time significant to reading comprehension.
