A Probe on SMAP: A Study Between the Relationship of Social Media and Academic Performance of Selected Grade 9 Students at Tagaytay City National High School

INTRODUCTION
Lack of interest in class lessons is caused by different factors which result in the low academic performance of students. One of these factors is social media websites wherein students are addicted. The purpose of the study is to identify the relationship between the use of social media and the academic performance of students. This study serves as an eye opener for the administrators and teachers to lessen the use of social media websites of students, and also to improve the teaching strategies to boost students' academic performance in every subject area.
METHODS
The researchers used the descriptive research questionnaires and were distributed to the thirty (30) student-respondents. The participants in this study consisted of grade 9 level students at Tagaytay City National High School. They were selected through random sampling using the fishbowl technique. The data were computed using frequency and percentage. The data were interpreted/explained using the highest and lowest frequency score.
RESULTS
Many students are fond of browsing different social media websites. Students consume almost all of the time in surfing the internet, and they usually do it in school and at home. It was also found out that there is a significant relationship between the use of social media websites and student's academic performance. The longer the students browse social media websites, the lower their academic performance.
DISCUSSIONS
The academic performance of the students deflates whenever there is more prolonged exposure to social media websites. Disallowing the bringing of cellphones in the school and improving the teacher's strategy necessary to help students divert their attention to class lessons. The teachers are motivated to prepare unique strategies that fit different kinds of learners. On the other hand, students are motivated to participate in every class discussion. Hence their attention to gadgets is diverted to the teacher. Students learn how to limit themselves to improve their academic performance in every subject area. The teachers take the initiative to improve their strategies in teaching, whereas students improved in class. They become more responsible in managing their time and choosing priorities.
