INTRODUCTION
This study focused on a bid to tap the Mother Tongue as Reading Bridge to English of the Grade 2 pupils in Bato District. It drew out the profile of the reading level of the grade 2 pupils in the different types of schools in Mother Tongue and in English. It tested the significant difference of the pupils reading level in MotherTongue and English.
METHODS
This study utilized the descriptive-evaluative method of research. The respondents answered the researcher-made questionnaire and analyzed the reading level of the pupils.
RESULTS
The study assesses the use of Mother Tongue as reading bridge to English of the Grade 2 pupils in terms of improving the pupils’ reading level, study habits, facilitated learning, and academic performance.
DISCUSSIONS
The following are the recommendations for future investigations: the effectiveness of a mother tongue-based multilingual education to improve learning outcomes; the constraints encountered in the implementation of mother tongue-based multilingual education; factors that affect the teaching competencies of teachers in teaching mother tongue; and intervention strategies utilized by the teachers to improve pupils' reading level using mother tongue as medium of instruction.
