INTRODUCTION
Ensuring that 100% of our pupils are readers before the school year ends is one of the heaviest tasks shouldered by Grade 1 teachers like me. Handling a range of pupils from 30-40 per class makes the task very tedious. Handling remedial programs alone are challenging enough, more so if preliminary assessment and the post-assessment of the pupils' reading skills are overlooked or improperly done. Resources on reading intervention tools in Filipino that suit the needs of our teachers and learners are very limited. Hence, the action research "3Ps: Interbensyong Pagbasa para sa Remedial na Pagpapabasa" was conceptualized.
The research aimed to develop a reading intervention program that will cover the pre-assessment, the intervention proper, the monitoring tools, and the post-assessment of the reading level of the learners who will undergo the program. Further, it aims to develop a program/tool that will promote self-directed learners and that will lessen the burden of teachers who will be implementing the tool since the learners are very much involved in the implementation of the program.
METHODS
The following intervention and strategies were used: pre-test in reading was conducted to identify the children's reading level; results of the pre-test were evaluated; development of the assessment tool for 3Ps; conducted daily remedial reading; utilization of the materials developed; recording of results with the help of the monitoring sheet made; conducted the post-test; evaluation of results; finalized, analyzed and interpreted the results; communicated the findings of the research with my co-teachers within our school.
RESULTS
The results of the research affirmed the effectiveness of the 3Ps in assessing, developing, evaluating the reading level in Filipino of grade 1 pupils. Furthermore, it enabled an efficient monitoring system that can easily be used by the teachers and the learners to ensure a more efficient reading intervention program. It significantly decreased the number of non-readers and slow readers among Grade 1 pupils in Ladislao Diwa Elementary School.
DISCUSSIONS
Based on the outcome of this study, 3Ps can raise the level of pupils' reading abilities, the following recommendations are given: Teachers are encouraged to use this tool in teaching reading to grade 1 pupils. Training on the use of this tool may be conducted for the benefit of teachers and pupils. Reading should be taught regularly.
