INTRODUCTION
87 out 180 pupils tested (48.33%) of Tambol Elementary School belong to the Frustration Level in English and Filipino based on the result of PHIL-IRI for School year 2016-2017. It is noted that in Grade 2 alone, 23 out of 42 pupils (54.76%) and 25 out of 42 (59.52%) are in the Frustration Level in English and Filipino. Through this project, we would like to address poor reading comprehension of Grade 2 pupils in Filipino.
METHODS
Pupils with a poor reading comprehension were identified based on the result of PHIL -IRI. With this problem at hand, the school head conducted SLAC on literacy in Filipino, especially on reading comprehension. It was also during LAC Session that a plan on the implementation of the project was made. The school head made class observation in Grade 2, and pupils with poor reading comprehension were interviewed by the school head using a tool. Root cause analysis was made based on the result of class observation and interview. The use of appropriate reading materials with pictures and text with bigger font size were prepared by the teacher. Follow up reading at home by parents were also implemented.
RESULTS
Findings show that after three months of implementation of the project, there was a decrease in the number of pupils under the Frustration Level in Filipino (from 87 to 45). In grade 2 were 3P1F was implemented, the number of identified frustration readers were reduced from 25 to 11, while the number of instructional and independent readers increased from 16 to 27 and 2 to 5, respectively.
Pupils learn better if they work with someone who respects and understand their weaknesses. Reading comprehension skills of pupils will also be enhanced if given extra time and attention by the teacher. Hence, it is easier for the pupils to recognize words if there are pictures and the font size of texts were bigger, and children enjoy reading with a partner. Parents providing support through follow up at home made this reading program a success.
DISCUSSIONS
This reading program may be used by other levels if they have children who have difficulties in word recognition and comprehension both English and Filipino.
