Abstract

INTRODUCTION

The ability to read and spell Sinurigaonon words is one of the competencies that can be found in Grade 1 Mother Tongue subject. Learners are expected to read and spell fluently after introducing the (twenty-one) 21 letters at the end of the second quarter as stated in K-12 Curriculum Guide. In Grade 1 Okra of Cantilan Pilot School, the school year 2017-2018, there are 17 out of 32 learners who can not spell and read the grade 1 level words despite reading remediation conducted by the teacher at the end of the second quarter. These learners have difficulty in putting the sound into symbolic letters. In order to improve the sound-symbol fluency of Grade 1 Okra non-reader pupils, this intervention "Panalinga ug Pormaha" (2Ps) Drill was conducted. Helping these children to spell will aid them to understand how letters are linked to sounds (phonemes) to form a word.

METHODS

Out of 32 Grade 1 pupil, there were 17 who could not put the sound of the letter to its symbolic form fluently. These pupils were the respondents of the study. This action research employed the descriptive method. The data were based on the number of words formed by the respondents as they put every sound of the word into a symbolic form from November 2017 to January 2018.

DISCUSSIONS

The results show the fluency level of sound-symbol correspondence skill of Grade 1-Okra pupils before and after the "2Ps Strategy". It is shown that there are an improvement of fluency level of thirteen (13) pupils to sixteen (16) pupils from poor fluency level to a satisfactory level. This intervention is supported byDepartment of Education Memo No. 220 s. 2016 to develop in Filipino children literacy that will contribute to lifelong learning.Furthermore, Hatcher 2004 said that additional training in phoneme awareness and linking phonemes with the letter is beneficial.
