INTRODUCTION
In an era where electronic information and different gadgets are at one's fingertips, it is difficult to arouse the interest of the students in reading. Reading is the source of all knowledge. If we would get our students to read 15 minutes a day, we could revolutionize them. The researcher believes that it is not too late to instill the desire for reading on our students and help develop their reading habits.
METHODS
This research aimed to study the effect of the (FMRP) Fifteen Minutes Reading Program in upgrading the poor reading ability, piquing the interest and responsiveness in reading, and helping develop the reading habits of Grade 7 students. This study used the Pre-test Post-test Research Design Experimental Method. Grade 7 students were kept under observation.
The respondents were 152 students who had poor reading performance based on the pre-test results. The Phil-IRI showed that only 30% passed the word recognition, 35% passed on reading comprehension, and only 31% passed the spelling test, with an alarming total passing rate of 32%. The researcher implemented the FMRP activities, ORA (Oral Reading Activity), Short-term Reading Activity (SRA), and Word Encounter (WE). During ICL, they were given an assessment to measure their performance, both oral and written.
RESULTS
The results were counted and tabulated by the researcher to see if there was an improvement in the students’ reading levels. It clearly showed in the post-test that the student’s word recognition level improved from 30% to 47%, their reading comprehension levels from 35% to 54%, and the spelling skills from 31% to 60%. The findings revealed that the student's total performance had improved from32% to 54% passing rate after the implementation of the program. It strongly indicates that FMRP (Fifteen Minutes Reading Program) has a positive effect on the learner.
DISCUSSIONS
The research had proved that regular reading is significant in improving the students’ spelling and word recognition skills and that it is a great help in developing the comprehension skill of the learners. Exposure of the students to reading text is beneficial to develop their reading habit. Likewise, the researcher recommended the FMRP (Fifteen Minutes Reading Program) before regular classes and an assessment during ICL.
