Abstract

Reading comprehension is considered the real core of the reading process and a big process around which all other processes are centered. This research was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of Project E-Farco to students with low comprehension. It will help pupils realize the significant role of reading as well as reading with comprehension. This study aimed to determine how to improve the reading comprehension of the respondents through the utilization of different strategies. The Project E-Farco strategy can be used to reach effective outcomes and improved level of comprehension for students.

 METHODS

This research study used the Pre-Test and Post-Test to 5 Grade 4 pupils to see the result of the effectiveness of the intervention utilized. This was measured by a comparison of pre-and post-intervention reading comprehension tests. In addition, a survey created and designed by the researcher for this study measured the students’ enjoyment for reading improved with the use of Project E-Farco.

The descriptive method was used to gather the necessary data from sources of information. It was a method that yielded the description of Improving the Reading Comprehension of Grade IV pupils using project E-FARCO in the School year 2017-2018. The respondents of this action research were composed of five selected Grade 4-Jupiter pupils enrolled in the current year at Tomas Daguinsin Elementary School, Brgy San Roque Victoria, Laguna, randomly selected using purposive sampling technique.

RESULTS

There were 33 pupils in Grade 4–Jupiter. After the PHIL-IRI test, 5 were found to be non-readers. It can be reflected that the pupils obtained a lower percentage score in the tests given to them. This clearly means that the pupils reading comprehension skills was really low since they were assessed from the start that they fell under non-reader in the PHIL-IRI results.

DISCUSSIONS

The pupils had shown a great change in the result of the post-test as shown in the data. The five (5) pupils obtained higher percentage scores from 67%, the lowest, to 83%, the highest scores. This goes to show that Project E-FARCO eliminates the factors that hinder pupils from developing their reading comprehension skills.
