Attitudes and Learning Style of Grade 8 English Students in the District of Taysan

Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Education is essential for everyone; it is the level of education that helps people earns respect and recognition. With education, people gain knowledge and enlarge their view of the world. Thus, attitudes and learning style of an individual had a significant impact on the way he learns. In this study, the researcher witnessed how great these factors influenced the learning process -the students' attitudes toward English, how they learned English, and use of the learning styles in the subject.

METHODS

The research design was descriptive with the use of a researcher-constructed questionnaire as a data gathering instrument. Respondents were 176 Grade 8 students from Junior High of Secondary Public Schools in the District of Taysan selected through stratified proportionate random sampling. Statistical tools were frequency, weighted mean, and Pearson r.

RESULTS

Most of the students had a grade of 81-85 while a closer number of 35 or 19.89 had a grade of 75-80 while the lowest grade was 60-64. The students had grades running from 81-85, indicating average performance. Results show that the highest mean was 4.72, indicating substantial agreement that student's knowledge in English gives them the confidence to communicate with other individuals and that they accept English positively. Aural/Visual: Most of the respondents indicated that to a very great extent, student listened attentively to language lessons. Analytical/ Global: Student-respondents prepared sequence of ideas before a writing activity showing how systematic they are. Physical/Verbal/Linguistic: They were assessed that they learned better reading and writing in their school activities.

DISCUSSIONS

The results demonstrate that the students are found to have average performance in their English 8 and had positive attitudes towards English as it will facilitate communication with other professionals, enhance the opportunity to get employed and make it easier when taking examinations. The visual and aural learning styles had great use of extent as they find these to be important to understand better English as well as the other subjects conducted this language.
