"Annyeong Haseyeo, Anong Nangyari Sayo?": Korean Wave Adaptation and Its Effects to the Cultural Behavior of the students of Placido T. Amo Senior High School, School Year 2018-2019

Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Cultural behavior refers to the behavior created by the influence of other cultures or other countries. Directly it pertains on how people show their culture in their everyday life. Korean Wave or in another term, Korean Hallyu is the rise of Korean Culture in different countries in Asia, wherein it became widespread in the Philippines. Despite these increasingly widespread of Korean Wave in the Philippines, there has been a little study which attempted to understand the K-pop fandom among the Filipinos, especially the students. It was defined as the culture and tradition of the Korean people. Students became an enormous enthusiast. In this study explored how Korean culture affects their cultural behavior.

METHODS

A descriptive quantitative method was used in this study. It was conducted at Placido T. Amo Senior High School. The study utilized a purposive sampling method which used 63 students who were a K-pop enthusiast. Statistical Treatment is also present in the study wherein weighted mean is used.

RESULTS

The standard practices which the students usually do in adapting the Korean culture are watching K-Drama and being a fan of Korean Stars which become a considerable aspect in terms of their Cultural Behavior wherein they tend to watch K-Drama rather than Filipino Drama. However, the Korean Wave clearly shows that Filipinos forgot their own culture "• Filipino Culture. A symposium and workshop is proposed for the students may have an idea of how being a fan disregarded the patriotism of being a Filipino. Moreover, they will know how to balance the two. Conducting a symposium and workshop can help the students to broaden their knowledge about Filipino culture further also the Korean culture and how it affects their personality and behavior as an individual.

DISCUSSIONS

The study shows how Korean Wave affects the cultural behavior of the students. Students should know their limit as a K-pop enthusiast since they should know how to balance their fandom and being a Filipino. The researchers strongly recommend conducting a symposium and workshop for the students to realize the importance of loving and preserving Filipino Culture. This program is a great avenue not just to the students but to all the Filipinos who almost forgot the values and unique cultures of the Filipinos.
