Abstract

INTRODUCTION

This study determined the utilization of the play-based instructional materials in developing the readiness skills of the kindergarten pupils in Bato District, Division of Camarines Sur. It also looked into the play-based instructional materials used by the kindergarten teachers in developing the pupils' readiness skills; the extent of the play-based instructional materials which develop the pupils' readiness skills; the constraints encountered by the respondents in developing the pupils' reading readiness skills, and the recommended solutions to address these constraints.

METHODS

This study applied the descriptive-correlational method of research with documentary analysis. The kindergarten teachers answered the researcher-made questionnaire. Frequency count, percentage, rank, proficiency level, weighted mean, Kendall Coefficient of Concordance W, and chi-square (x2) were used to treat the data statistically. Significance level was set at 0.05.

RESULTS

The kindergarten teachers "Almost Always Utilized" the play-based instructional materials in developing the pupils' readiness skills. The play-based instructional materials utilized by the teachers are considered "Very Effective" in developing the skills of the kindergarten pupils in the different domains, namely, social skills, motor skills, Language Skills, Reading Skills, and Writing Skills. The kindergarten teachers encountered constraints in developing the pupils' skills. Some of these are pupils' social adjustment, lack of Instructional Materials, and transition activities for parents and pupils.

DISCUSSIONS

There is a need to assess kindergarten pupils' readiness. Encourage the teachers to use indigenous instructional materials or locally produced or parent-made toys and play equipment. The use of play-based instructional materials is recommended to facilitate the learning process and develop the skills of the pupils. Teachers should find ways in motivating the pupils to become active learners and Conduct various activities to develop social and emotional skills of the pupils. Tap parents' support to help the pupils improve their school performance. Moreover, lastly, consider the pointers for a more improve play-based instruction.
