The Effectiveness of the K Reading Program in Enhancing the Reading Comprehension of Grade 4 Pupils in Agustin Abadilla Elementary School

Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Based on the results of the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) Group Screening Test conducted last July 2018, out of 253 grade four pupils who took the reading comprehension test, 52 of them failed and fell under frustration level. The K-Reading Program is designed to build critical reading skills that will help your child develop a lifelong love of reading and a solid foundation for academic success. It cultivates the reading skills that can create a lifetime of academic advantages. For this reason, it is crucial to study the effectiveness of K-Reading Program in improving the reading comprehension of grade four pupils of Agustin Abadilla Elementary School to lessen the difficulties of students regarding their reading ability.

METHODS

This study was centered on the effectiveness of K-Reading Program as a strategy in improving the reading comprehension of gradefourpupilsofAgustinAbadillaElementarySchoolusingPre-Experimentalutilizingtheone-group,pretest-posttest,design.

RESULTS

The pretest result shows that the minimum score of the participants is 1, the maximum score is 3, the mean is 1.90, and the standard deviation is .738, which shows that the participants have an abysmal performance during the pretest. The post-test result shows that the minimum score of the participants is 8, the maximum score is 10, the mean is 9.500, and the standard deviation is .70711, which shows that the participants have improved performance during post-test. The paired samples test result shows that the degrees of freedom are 9, t -value is 19.000, and significant value is .000. The data shows that there is a significant difference between the pretest and post-test results of the participants after the adaptation of the K Reading Program.

DISCUSSIONS

This research identified that the results of the study provided an understanding of the effectiveness of K Reading program in enhancing the reading comprehension of grade four pupils in Agustin AbadillaElementarySchool. In general, the findings suggest that the modification in the teaching-learning process, strategies, and materials with the use of K Reading Program in treatment group profoundly affected and enhanced the reading comprehension problem of the pupils.
