INTRODUCTION
Poor reading performance is one of the various problems that a teacher encountered as she teaches. In the K to 12 Curriculum, children in the fourth grade should not know only how to read correctly but also be able to comprehend the text they are reading. Therefore, any child who cannot perform these skills should be given immediate attention. Additional assistance is needed through research to learn what strategies are most active. This action research aims to determine the effectiveness of a reading plan to enhance the reading comprehension of Grade IV pupils of Julian D. Luna Elementary School. It focuses on how to improve their reading comprehension in order to achieve a 75% increase in the comprehension level by improving their proficiency, vocabulary, and understanding of the reading materials.
METHODS
This descriptive research aims to assess the effectiveness of the dimensional approach in enhancing reading comprehension among pupils. The respondents of the study are all the Grade IV pupils who have poor reading comprehension or those that belong to the frustration level. The researchers used data gathering procedures. The result of PHIL-IRI was the basis of assessing the level of comprehension of the subjects of the study. The Pre-Test Result served as the baseline data of their level of comprehension. After applying the solutions, the researchers conducted the PHIL-IRI Post Test to determine if there is an improvement in the reading comprehension of the subject.
RESULTS
It can be deduced from the table that the obtained difference between the pre-test score and the post-test scores of the pupils' comprehension level is significant, which means that the post-test mean score is significantly higher than the pre-test mean score.
DISCUSSIONS
The results demonstrate that almost half of the Grade IV pupils fell into the frustration level of comprehension based on the PHIL -IRI Oral Reading Pre Test. The project "Give Me A Story, and I Understand" is implemented to address the needs of the pupils in enhancing reading comprehension. The Post Test in PHIL -IRI revealed that after implementing the project, there was an increase in the level of their reading performance. Since the project "Give Me A Story and I Understand" uses the five-dimensional approach, Think to Pair Share Strategy and use graphic organizers in reading had been found to be useful in teaching reading.
