"My Parents, my Partners in Success" : A Program in Increasing Parents Participation in Improving Academic Performance of Pupils

Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Parental involvement in a child's education is crucial. When parents are involved in their children's education, children are more likely to do better in school, be better behaved, have more positive attitudes toward school, and grow up to be successful in life. Pupils' success is a shared interest of both the school and family. Envision parents as partners in the learning process, and then identify concrete ways that partnership can be activated. Parents and stakeholders are encouraged to actively participate in planning, implementing, and assessing their school programs and activities to improve pupils' performance.

METHODS

The respondents of this study are the 25 Grade 1 section Ampalaya pupils and their parents of Mandus Central Elementary School, Lingig -3 District, Division of Surigao del Sur for the School Year2017 -2018. The main source of data gathering was the attendance of the parents in all school-related programs and activities and the grades of the pupils in 5 core subject areas before and after the implementation of the program.

RESULTS

The performance rating of Grade 1 Ampalaya pupils before and after the intervention, "My Parents, My Partners in Success Program." There is an increase of 3.2% in the grand total MPS of pupils from 1st to 3rd Quarter. To wit: Mother Tongue increased by 3.63%, Mathematics increased by 5.2%, and Aral Panlipunan increased by 1.34%. Even in Filipino and English Subjects that were not yet offered in the 1st semester, pupils were able to attain an MPS 84.27 in Filipino and 84.93 in English in their first assessment in the third quarter with high MPS. Which means that the intervention was very effective and resulted in the increase of MPS with the involvement of the parents.

DISCUSSIONS

The study proved that active participation of parents in school-related programs and activities tend to have positive effect on pupils, encouraging them to show better academic performance.
