"Laro Ko, Dunong Ko": An Activity to Improve Oral Reading Comprehension Level of 15 Grade 5-Acacia Pupils of Mandus Central Elementary School

INTRODUCTION
Word games that challenge a person to discover new meanings and new words are a great and fun tool in the quest for expanding vocabulary. Examples include crossword puzzles, anagram, word jumble, scrabble, and boggle (Hansen, 2017). Having the belief that low reading comprehension affects the academic performance of pupils; an intervention was designed to increase the reading comprehension of 15 identified pupils who belong to frustration level. Helping children improved their oral reading comprehension at a young age will aid them in improving their academic performance and their love for reading.
METHODS
This study used descriptive design as a statistical tool involving pupils as respondents. The data gathered were carefully recorded, tabulated, and analyzed by the researcher. The researcher used the Phil-IRI pre-test and Phil-IRI post-test results of Grade V-Acacia of Mandus Central Elementary School for the S.Y. 2017-2018. The Phil-IRI pre-test was conducted in the first week of September 2017 to gauge pupils reading ability and identifying who were the pupils needing immediate intensive remediation for future progress. The parents were informed through a meeting of the reading ability of their children to gain full support and cooperation during the conduct of the intervention activity.
RESULTS
Based on findings, the following conclusions were drawn: "Laron Ko, Dunong Ko" activity much helped pupils reading comprehension because the pupils' love for reading increased. "Laron Ko, Dunong Ko" activity has improved the pupils` oral reading comprehension level in Phil-IRI post-test.
DISCUSSIONS
This study found that low vocabulary was the prime factor of low reading comprehension, lack of interest in reading because of failure to comprehend, playing word games enhances pupils' vocabulary leading to comprehension progression. These were the significant difference in the pupils reading comprehension because of "Laron Ko, Dunong Ko" activity before and after the implementation of "Laron Ko, Dunong Ko" activity.
