"I-RACE (Individualized Reading and Comprehension Engagement): Enhance the Reading Skills and Performance among Grade 6 Pupils of Dayapan Elementary School"

Abstract

INTRODUCTION

Reading is an integral part of life, and having strong reading skills will help in successful navigation in society. As such, reading becomes an essential of basic education. In this study, using the Revised PHIL-IRI, pupils' reading level was located and individualized reading and comprehension was done to enhance the pupil's reading skills and performance and hopes to recommend the most appropriate plan of action.

METHODS

The study used the Revised PHIL-IRI to test the experimental groups of Grade 6 student consisting of nine pupils. A pre-test was administered to locate their reading level. They were given individualized reading and comprehension engagement after the reading level was identified. A post-testwas conducted for comparison and analysis.

RESULTS

The research showed the following results: 1) increased in word recognition through miscues; 2) there was increased reading speed; improved reading comprehension; 4) better academic performance. There were also intrinsic changes noted such as pupils' boost of confidence and appreciation of reading.

DISCUSSIONS

The respondents after participating in the project gained more skills and knowledge. They gained confidence and became active in classroom activities and discussions thus increasing their participation rate. They developed a more favorable attitude towards reading. Since they read at the level that they are a most comfortable and gradual increase in the level of difficulty, they learned to appreciate reading. This made them enjoy and continue doing it even after the project. The study concludes that I-RACE is effective in enhancing the pupil's reading skills and performance. For the teacher to ensure that the project will be sustained in the school level, proper identification of the pupil's reading level should be done. Materials should also be made available for the pupils so that there will be no gaps between each session.
